travel asia china hong kong lantau island tai o

Taio O, a city/island on the west of Lautau Island, is an ancient fishing village with a history in piracy and smuggling.
It is also sometimes called the "Venice" of Hong Kong. A good deal of this village appears to hang precariously over the water on stilts.
The town is split in two by a narrow river and small ferries carry the residents back and forth.
The village is famous for its fish paste."
When we visited it in 1991, I found it's history and ambiance fascinating.
Lately, I read that a fire destroyed much of the town in 2000, but that it still remains a favorite site for tourists.
